Frank Merriwell's fortune is lost when his well-meaning but gullible uncle makes some bad investments, and he (Frank) is compelled to leave college to go to work. He takes an entry-level position with a railroad, and through hard work and smarts, proves his mettle. He has to contend with the usual jealous enemies and has some harrowing experiences. He befriends a young brother and sister performing duo (the boy is lame and the sister is blind); they are entirely on their own, and Frank takes them under his wing.
