Chapter 55

THE ISLAND:

Alex follows Henry and David into the spaceship and over to the odd-looking control console. “So this is what controls the devices. What about the rest of the ship? You said it’s in good shape. Can it fly again?”

“I am not sure yet, Alex,” says Henry. “We have only begun to start up the various systems.”

“It would be nice if we could fly this thing to Nevada.”

Once the rest of the crew is on the Mystic, Okana drives the motorboat back to the dock, then carries the ladder used for the submarine into the crater and over to the old ship. He leans it against the side next to the rusted hatch covers, then goes to the spaceship and steps inside. “Ready when you are, Alex.”

Alex follows Okana to the side of the rusted ship, and waits at the bottom of the ladder while Okana climbs up and wedges the pry bar into the crack separating the two sides of the hatch covers. The screeching and popping of rusted hinges echoes in the crater, as one of the hatch covers slowly opens, then the pry bar suddenly slams down against one cover, as the other one breaks away, slides down the side of the ship, and splashes into the water. Okana leans over the remaining cover to look inside, but the angle is too sharp, and the interior too dark, so he climbs down the ladder.

When Okana steps onto the beach, Alex grabs the ladder and leans it into the opening of the missing cover, then climbs up and steps off into the cargo hold.

Okana climbs up the ladder and steps inside, then sees Alex kneeling on the deck next to a large pile of bones.

Alex uses a rib bone to separate the pile and hooks it under something white. He eases it out of the tangled remnants of bones, then stands and holds it out toward Okana. “This is the captain’s hat Burk was wearing in the movie. These bones are human.”

Okana moves closer, kneels down to grab a large femur bone, then stands and carries it back to the opening and into the sunlight for a closer look. He turns and looks back at Alex. “I can see teeth marks scraped into this leg bone. Someone ate this person.”

“Colonel Dieter is the only skeleton in the cave, and it’s still in one piece. I guess he became a cannibal.”

Okana tosses the leg bone onto the pile. “I can’t blame him. I think anyone desperate enough would do the same thing.”

Alex feels something strange on the side of the rib bone and walks to the opening. In the sunlight, he sees a half-round notch in the side of the bone. “This person was shot.”

Okana moves around the pile and uses the toe of his shoe to separate the bones. “I don’t see any skulls.”

“He probably threw them into the ocean. He might have felt guilty looking at the faces of the people he was about to eat.”

“I wonder who managed to escape in the skiff with that movie we watched.”

“Hard to say.”

Okana moves back to the opening. “It stinks in here. I’ve seen enough.”

Alex tosses the rib and hat onto the deck and follows Okana down the ladder to the beach. “I found something in the cave when I was marooned here yesterday and I want to check it out.”

He turns and walks up the beach with Okana and enters the cave. He reaches the area of the rock wall where he pried away the crumbling lava, and it appears to be the entrance into the lower part of the ship, just like the ones in Nevada. “This is the outside door of the airlock into the cargo hold.”

Alex drops to his knees and sits on the edge of the cave, then steps down into the airlock. He stands up and sees the last of the four devices laying against the far wall, next to a large silver sphere, about six-feet in diameter with a mirrored surface.

He looks over his shoulder at Okana, who climbed down beside him. “We found the last device.” He tells him, then steps through the interior airlock door into the spaceship.

Okana looks around for a second before following Alex inside. “What’s that ball for?”

“I have no idea. This ship is different from the others.”

Alex walks across the room and stops next to the device on the floor. “These four devices were designed to operate together to clean the atmosphere. Once we retrieve the other two from the water, we can use this ship to let them do what they were intended to do, and clean up the mess we’ve made in our atmosphere.”

“Hold on a minute, Alex. Haven’t they done enough damage?”

“We’ll have to learn more about how they work first.”

“Those things are really old, Alex. What if they don’t work as planned? It could make things worse.”

“Henry and Lewis will figure it out.”

Okana walks across to the silver ball and looks at his distorted reflection on the surface. He places a hand on the smooth surface and jumps back when the sphere moves. “This thing is light weight, Alex. I barely touched it and it rolled along the wall.”

Alex steps closer to the silver sphere, and when he taps the side with his knuckles, a hollow sound echoes from the inside. “I’ll have to ask Norton what this was used for.”

Alex places both hands on the silver surface to roll it away from the wall to see the other side and receives a mild electrical shock, but thinks it’s just static electricity. “You’re right about being light weight. It must be hollow.”

Okana notices some strange-looking clothing on the floor behind the sphere. “I think we’ve found the crew. One of them, anyway. Take a look.”

Alex kneels down next to the mummified remains of a human body wearing a one-piece silver suit. “There should have been four people on this spaceship. I wonder what happen to the other three?” He stands and looks at Okana. “I’d better call Martin and let him know what happened.”

They climb back into the cave and walk outside. Alex enters Martin’s number, and a moment later, he’s transferred to his office. He turns on the speaker so Okana can listen. “We did it, Martin.” He explains the highlights of what took place. “We need some support out here. Those pirates had connections and I’m sure we aren’t the only ones who know about this island.”

“I already have the Coast Guard on standby. Someone named Mason told them to stay away from the island. I’ll call them right away.”

“What about military support?”

“That will take a little more time, but I’ll make the call.”

“One more thing. I need you to call the Canadian authorities and have Okana removed from their wanted list. It was self-defense and I don’t want him sitting in jail until the authorities figure out what happened.”

“I’ll take care of it. Is he with you right now?”

“Yes.”

“Tell him to call home. His father had a fatal heart attack two days ago.”

“Oh. All right. Thanks, Martin.” Alex presses end and hands the phone to Okana.

Okana enters the number for the phone at the family ranch in Stillwater, Wyoming, and his cousin answers. She explains what happened and asks him to come home as soon as possible.

When Okana finishes talking, he hangs up and looks at Alex. “I need to get home, but I don’t want to leave you without any backup.”

“Rita can handle herself and I’ve got Josh, David, and Mike to help. Let’s get back to the ship and have Bett take you to the airport in Seward.”

Okana hesitates. “That’s not much help, Alex.”

“The sooner you leave, the sooner Bett can get back to increase my odds. Let’s go.”

Alex and Okana climb into the motorboat and drive it back to the Mystic, and once they bump against the stern, Rita jumps in.

“Can I get a ride back?”

Alex nods to Okana, who climbs out. “I’ll be back in a minute.”

Okana walks across the deck and into the lounge where he tells Mike about his father. “I hate to impose on you, Mike.”

“You saved this ship and our lives, Okana. It’s the least I can do.”

Bett is listening and looks over at Josh. “Let’s get my baby ready to go. We need to get our friend back home.”

Lisa stands staring out the window at the island. “Do you think the pirates will come back?”

Mike moves up beside her and considers the possibility. “Someone filed murder charges against Okana. Whoever that was, they must know the location of this island, or they wouldn’t know about the murder.”

“I wonder if there are any charges against me. I shot that poor man.”

He turns his head to look at her. “Poor man, Lisa? He was a pirate. Hell, all of them were going to kill you and everyone else. It was self-defense.”

“I’ve never even fired a gun before, Mike.” She’s silent for a moment. “I just remember opening my eyes and seeing that man on the floor and all the blood.”

“I’m sorry that happened to you, Lisa.”

“Can I get a ride back to the mainland with Bett? I just need to go home for a while.”

“I understand. I’ll let her know. What about David? Does he know you’re leaving?”

“Yes. He’s a nice guy, and we’ll try to get together when he’s finished with the spaceship.”

Alex drops Rita off on the dock and drives back across to the Mystic. When he steps onto the stern, he hears the helicopter’s engines start to whine and goes over to Okana and Lisa, who are waiting to get in with Bett. He gives Lisa a hug. “You’re very brave. Take care of yourself.” Lisa gives him a quick kiss on his cheek before climbing into the helicopter, and he turns to his best friend. “Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.”

“Thanks, Alex.”

Okana gives Alex a quick hug, then climbs into the helicopter with Bett and Lisa. Once Alex moves into the ship, the helicopter takes off and Bett flies them away from the island, toward the airport in Seward.

Rita pulls her red hair behind one ear and holds it there as she bends over the device control panel and studies the various push pads. She straightens up and looks down at Henry. “Can you decipher what it says?”

“Only partially.” He indicates one of the touch pads. “I believe this one is for the activation frequency of one hundred-eight-seven gigahertz, and this one is to turn it off, using three-hundred sixty-four gigahertz.”

“Those sound like molecular resonance frequencies.”

“That is correct, my dear. You are very astute.”

“Does it say anything about what the other frequencies do?”

“As far as I know, those are the only frequencies required to operate the devices.”

“Did you learn how the devices remove contaminates from the atmosphere?”

“Not exactly. Only the theory. We did not even know about the devices until three days ago. We will learn more once we get them to Nevada.”

CAVE RANCH:

Kristy carries the satellite phone out onto the back porch, and everyone is gone, including the horses, so she walks down the steps and over to the barn. Jessica is sitting on a bale of hay, and she hears Derek and her grandpa arguing in the tack room, where they store the saddles. She sits next to Jessica. “What are they arguing about?”

“Your uncle Alex. Something about Robert blaming him for your parents’ accident.”

Kristy hears the strange phone ringing and presses the green button. “Hello?”

“Hi, Kristy. It’s Alex. Is everyone all right?”

“Yeah, I was pretty scared, Uncle Alex. Derek saved us.”

Alex sighs with relief. “That’s good news.”

She stares at the tack room when she hears Derek and her grandpa yelling at each other. “Can you wait a minute?”

“Sure.”

Kristy stomps across to the open door and walks into the room. “Just stop it right now!” she yells. “You’re acting like the kindergarten kids.” She holds the phone out to Robert. “It’s Uncle Alex.”

Robert hesitates, stares down at her wet hair and her determined expression, then thinks about almost losing her a short time ago, and how he felt about it being his fault. He slowly nods at her and takes the phone, then brings it up to his ear. “Alex, I, uh. I’d like you to stop by the ranch when you can. Listen, uh. I want to apologize. I had a hard time dealing with things, but, uh. I’d just like for you to come home to the ranch.”

“I understand, Dad. Listen, I might be a little busy for a while, but I’ll come home once I’m finished. I’m just glad all of you are safe.”

“Okay. Goodbye, son.” He presses the red button and smiles down at Kristy. “He said he’ll get here once he’s done.” When Kristy smiles and walks to him with her arms open, he kneels down and hugs her tightly. “Thank you, Kristy.”

Alex drives the motorboat back to the island to check on Henry, David, and Rita, but as he walks across the beach, he cannot stop thinking about the large silver sphere in the cargo hold of the spaceship. For some odd reason, he feels a sense of Déjà vu, as though he has previously seen a similar silver ball.

He continues up the beach to the cave and enters the cargo hold, and slowly holds his palms out within an inch of the mirrored surface, hesitant touch to it. When he places both hands on the surface, he receives a strong electrical shock. “Damn!”

Alex suddenly finds himself standing outside the spaceship. He steps into the alien craft and sees Henry and David in the control room. “Where is Rita?”

Henry looks up from the control console. “She is on the Mystic.

Alex looks around the interior, positive he had left Rita on the island with Henry, but there is no sign of her. He turns to Henry, who is staring at him. “All right. Can she fly again, Doc?”

“This ship is slightly different from the other two. David and I will need time to become familiar with this design if we are to fly it to Nevada. It is in surprisingly good shape, but I will not know until we replace the three depleted power crystals.”

“Right. I’ll call Director Donner and have them delivered to the military airport on Adak Island. Bett can go pick them up in the helicopter. I’m sure she wouldn’t mind.”

When Alex steps outside of the spaceship, he notices Okana standing in front of the cave and walks across the beach to join him.

The crunching of gravel from someone approaching in his direction draws Okana’s attention and he turns to look at his friend. “Hey, Alex. What did the Doc say about the ship? Can it be salvaged?”

Alex hesitates to answer. Why does it feel like I’ve done this before? “He thinks it might still work. There’s another opening inside the cave I want to check out. It might be a way to get into the lower section of the spaceship. Let’s go inside.”

Alex enters the cave, then abruptly stops when he sees light coming from the interior of the spaceship through the missing section of rock. This looks familiar.

Alex drops onto the slanted floor and steps through the airlocks into a large room.

Okana drops into the airlock and sees Alex staring at the last device. Past him is a six-foot diameter silver ball. “What does that thing do?”

Alex moves closer to the mirrored sphere. “I don’t know, but I’ve seen one before.” He reaches out with both hands toward the surface.

Okana sees a strange expression on Alex’s face. “What are you doing?”

“I’m not sure, but I feel like I need to touch it.” He places his palms on the distorted image of his face in the mirrored surface and feels a high voltage electrical shock. He jerks his hands back from the sphere and messages his left wrist, which feels recently sprained. What the hell is going on?

Okana sees Alex suddenly grab his left wrist and appears confused. “Is something the matter with you, Alex?”

“What? I don’t know.” He looks at Okana and something is different about him. “Have you always had a mustache?”

“Yeah. Are you all right, Alex?”

“I’ll be fine, once we get some military support out here.”

Okana notices something strange on the floor. “I think we’ve found the ship’s crew. One of them, anyway. Take a look.” When Alex doesn’t respond, he looks over and his friend appears to be off in another world. “Alex?”

Alex turns to Okana. “What? Oh, right.” He kneels next to the mummified remains of a human body wearing a one-piece silver jumpsuit. “There should be four people on this ship. I wonder what happened to the other three.”

“It looks human.”

“We know they were the first human species to occupy this planet. I’d better call Martin.”

They climb back into the cave and walk outside, then Alex uses his satellite phone to call Martin Donner, the Director of National Security. “We did it, Martin. We found the alien spaceship, but we need some support out here. I’m sure we’re not the only ones who know about this island.”

“I have the Coast Guard on standby. They should arrive within the hour”

Alex has a sinking feeling in his stomach. “I know it will take time, but it’s urgent that you get me some military support right away. I have a bad feeling about this situation, Martin.”

“I’ll do my best. Is Okana with you right now?”

Alex feels a lump in his throat. I swear I already know what he’s going to say. He moves a short distance away from Okana and speaks softly. “Did his father have a fatal heart attack?”

“Yes, how did you know?”

“I’ll tell him. Just get me some damn air support.”

“I’ll take care of it.”

Alex walks back and hands the phone to his friend. “I think you should call home. It’s about your father, and your family needs to get in touch with you. I’m sorry I dragged you into this mess. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.”

Okana enters the number for his family ranch and his mother answers. She explains what happened and asks him to come home as soon as possible. When he finishes talking, he wipes away the tears clouding his vision and looks at Alex. “Listen, I need to get home, but I don’t want to leave you without any backup.”

“I know you’ve always had my back, but Rita can handle herself if we have any trouble. I have David and Mike to help, and Josh makes five. Let’s get back to the Mystic. Bett can take you to the airport in the helicopter.”

Okana hesitates. “That’s not much help.”

“Director Donner said the Coast Guard should be here soon. I’ll be okay. Let’s go.”

The long flowing curls of Rita’s red hair jostle back and forth as she tiptoes up the stairs to the bridge. She knows Alex will be returning to the Mystic soon, and she needs a ride back to the island. In order for her plan to work, Alex has to be here on the Mystic while she is on the island with Henry and David. Josh isn’t feeling well, and now is a good opportunity for him to see a doctor, so Bett is going to give him a ride to Seward, Alaska to a clinic. It’s now or never.

She peers over the last step to make sure no one is inside, then hurries up the stairs, grabs the satellite phone, and hurries back down. She checks her pistol, tucks it into the back of her pants, and tugs her coat down before stepping out onto the stern.

Alex and Okana climb into the motorboat and drive back to the Mystic, where Rita jumps in. “Can I get a ride back?” She asks.

Alex hesitates. For some odd reason, he doesn’t trust her. It’s nothing he can explain, really. It’s just a simmering hatred in the back of his mind. “Can you wait until Okana leaves?”

Rita holds out the sat phone. “Henry needs to talk to someone named Norton. I told him I’d be right back.”

Alex looks up at Okana, who has climbed out onto the deck. “I’ll be back in a minute.”

After dropping Rita off on the dock, Alex drives back across to the Mystic. When he steps onto the stern, he hears the helicopter’s engines start to whine and goes over to Okana. “Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.”

“Thanks, Alex.”

Okana gives him a quick hug, then climbs into the helicopter with Bett and Josh. Once the aircraft takes off, Alex climbs the stairs to join Mike on the bridge.

Rita waits until Alex climbs on board the Mystic, then enters a number on the satellite phone. “Cave found the last device, Steve, but you’re not going to believe what else he found. It’s a spaceship. No, I’m not joking. The control for activating the devices is on this alien ship, but you had better hurry. I’m sure he’s called the Director of National Security to arrange for military support. Here are the GPS coordinates for the island and the device in the Bering Sea.” She gives him the numbers. “No, they don’t suspect me yet, and I plan to keep it that way. I’ll meet you at the facility.”

She knows Henry won’t be a problem when the transport helicopter arrives, but David will try to stop her from taking the device in the cave. She brings the pistol out from the small of her back and slips it into her coat pocket.

On the bridge of the Mystic, Tanner hears the deep thumping of an approaching helicopter. He grabs the binoculars off the control console and looks in the direction of the sound. When he focuses the lenses, he smiles. “The Coast Guard helicopter is coming our way.” He hands the binoculars to Alex.

Alex focuses on the orange and white helicopter, about half a mile from the island. At least he has some support, although they probably won’t have much firepower. Still, it’s better than no support at all until the military arrives.

Alex’s smile turns into a frown as he recognizes a trail of white smoke streaking through the sky toward the helicopter. “NO, DAMN IT!”

The helicopter is suddenly a massive ball of fire, with flaming shredded pieces dropping into the ocean.

Tanner stares at the smoke on the water. “What just happened?”

Alex aims the binoculars in the direction of the trail of smoke. “We’re being invaded.” He grabs the microphone for the portable radios. “Are you listening, Rita?”

Outside the spaceship, Rita hears Alex on her radio. “I heard an explosion. What just happened?”

“Two large black helicopters just shot down a Coast Guard rescue helicopter, and they’re coming our way.”

“What do you want me to do?”

“Tell Henry and David to stay inside the spaceship until we know what’s going on. I’ll be there in a minute. Meet me on the dock.” He looks at Tanner. “I’ll grab the shotguns and take the motorboat to the island while you get the Mystic away from here.”

“That’s a bad plan, Alex. I can help.”

“Thanks, but the Mystic’s too vulnerable.”

Alex grabs the binoculars and stares out the window for one last look at the approaching helicopters. “You can come back when they leave.”

“And do what? Collect the bodies?”

“I hope not.”

Rita places her hand on the butt of the pistol inside her coat pocket and steps into the spaceship.

David moves toward the exit and Rita steps in his way. “What’s going on?” He asks.

“We’re going to have company in a few minutes. Just stay inside and I’ll go find out what happened.”

Rita hurries back to the dock and sees Alex standing in the motorboat at the stern of the Mystic. He’s collecting shotguns from Tanner, and placing them on one of the seats, so she waits while Alex drives across to her.

Alex eases the motorboat against the dock. “One of the helicopters is a troop carrier, and the other one is for cargo. I brought shotguns for you and David.”

He reaches down and grabs one of the shotguns, then hands it to Rita. As he reaches down for the other two, he hears the distinct sound of the pump handle inserting a round into the chamber of a shotgun. When he looks up, Rita is pointing it at his chest. “What are you doing?”

“Throw the shotguns into the water.”

Alex stares at her. “Don’t do this.” He eases his hand down to his jean pocket.

Rita brings her shotgun up to her shoulder and sights down the barrel at Alex. “Don’t even think about it. I know about your pistol. Take it out slowly and toss it into the water.”

Alex knows he doesn’t stand a chance. He holds her gaze and does as she asks, hearing the pistol splash into the ocean. “Why are you doing this?”

“Get rid of the shotguns.”

Alex reaches down, grabs the barrel of a shotgun, and looks at Rita. He thinks about using it as a club, but she indicates not to, so he tosses them into the water. “Now what?”

“Go back to the Mystic and take it away from the island.” She sees the rage building in Alex’s eyes. “Just do what I say and no one will get hurt. I don’t want to see the Mystic full of holes.”

Alex moves forward to the steering wheel, but hesitates to sit down. “What do you want?”

Rita brings the shotgun down even with her waist, but keeps the barrel aimed at Alex. “We want the devices.”

“Why? Who are you working for?”

“Not working for, Alex. Working with, and you don’t need to know. Just leave and I won’t hurt anyone.”

“Like your friends didn't hurt anyone in the Coast Guard helicopter a few minutes ago?”

“I had nothing to do with that. Now leave!”

Alex reluctantly drives the motorboat away from the dock. The deep thumping of the approaching helicopters gets louder, and he knows if they don’t leave the area right away, the invaders might capture the Mystic. He doesn’t trust Rita to keep her word and his friends might be dead when he returns, but he knows he has no choice.

Rita waits on the dock until the Mystic is racing away from the island, then goes back to the spaceship.

David is standing in the entrance of the alien craft, watching Rita walking up the beach. “Where’s Alex?”

Rita stops just outside the spacecraft. “He’ll come back once the helicopters leave. Get back inside.”

David hesitates to do as she asks. “I don’t understand. What’s going on?”

“We’re taking the device in the cave. Just do what I say and no one will get hurt.” When David doesn’t move, she aims the shotgun at him, but he just glares back. “I’m not kidding.”

David slowly turns and goes back inside and sees the questioning expression from Henry. “Alex isn’t coming. They want one of the devices, so just stay calm and maybe we can find a way out of this.”

David gets an idea and slowly walks to the four chairs in the center of the control room and sees Rita watching him through the opening. He sits down and waits for her reaction, but she doesn’t pay him any attention. He knows if he can shut down the power and seal them inside this ship, they will be safe from whoever is coming. He figures if the exterior of this alien craft can survive in molten rock for one-hundred and eighty-million years, a shotgun blast sure as hell won’t hurt it.

Rita turns and looks up as a helicopter suddenly appears over the edge of the crater. Four, thick nylon ropes drop out of the open side door, and a moment later, four armed men slide down them to the beach.

David starts to reach down to the control pad, but stops when Rita suddenly steps inside.

Rita holds the shotgun waist high and aims it at David in case he tries to be a hero. “Come over here, Henry. We’re going outside.”

Henry’s mouth opens slightly as he looks at David for help. He thinks of him as a son.

David lowers his hand toward the control panel to cut the power before Henry makes it to the exit. He flinches and jerks his hand away when the deafening roar from the shotgun’s warning blast fills the room. He stares at Rita as she swings the shotgun around from the exit and aims it at him, then raises his hands. “All right! You’ve made your point.” He sees the imploring look in Henry’s eyes. “I’m sorry, Doc.”

Henry’s shoulders sag as he slowly shuffles across the room and out through the entrance. “What do you want, Rita?” He asks.

“Just stand over there away from the ship until we’re done.”

Using a pair of binoculars, Alex stares back at the two helicopters hovering over the island, frustrated there is nothing he can do. He watches four men slide down ropes from the first helicopter and disappear into the crater, then the aircraft moves off to one side of the island to allow the second aircraft, a Sikorsky S-94 cargo helicopter, to move into position. Two thick cables with slings quickly descend. A few moments later, the device from the entrance of the cave is hoisted into the air, swaying below the helicopter as it moves away.

The first aircraft returns and hovers over the crater. A moment later, Alex watches two people in harnesses on the end of a rope being pulled into the helicopter. For an instant, he thinks one of them has gray hair. A moment later, he watches four more people rising out of the crater and recognizes Rita’s full head of red hair. “Damn her!” he growls, realizing she has taken Henry.

He watches as the last four people disappear inside the aircraft, then both helicopters swing away from the island and fly away. “Take us back, Mike.”

Tanner brings the Mystic close to the island, sets the controls on autopilot, then he and Alex run out from the bridge and hurry down the stairs to the motorboat, still tied to the stern.

When Alex looks across at the island, he sees David walking down to the dock. He sighs with relief, jumps into the boat, and motors over to the island. As the boat bumps against the dock, he notices his friend’s angry expression. “Get in. We’ll wait on the Mystic until help arrives.”

“That bitch Rita took the Doc, Alex.”

“I know. Now get in so we can figure out where she took him.”

Alex takes them back to the Mystic, where Tanner is waiting on the stern. They all walk up the outside stairs to the bridge, and no one speaks for several long moments until David breaks the silence. “At least we have the other three devices.”

Alex gives him a somber look. “I’m more worried about what Rita has planned for the device she did get. They may have been designed to clean the atmosphere, but we know how potentially destructive they can be. Once we get some support out here, I’m going back to the mainland. The only way to find the Doc is to find out whom Rita is working with. If he comes to any harm, she’ll wish she had never met me.”

David has seen that look in Alex’s eyes once before, when he talks about the six men who murdered his wife, Sevi. Alex had killed each one without mercy.
