Part Four

Beyond the Poses

Yoga isn’t just physical poses; it’s a comprehensive system that incorporates many other practices that can transform. Each of the following tools and techniques—breathing, meditation, mantras, mudras, bandhas, and chakras—represents an opportunity to support and deepen one’s yoga practice. For example, chanting a mantra at the beginning of a yoga session can help set one’s intention. During the session, activating the chakras can bring the focus to certain areas of the body. And after the session, the body is calm and the mind is clear—both well prepped for meditation.

Outside of class, and independent of the poses, these tools and techniques can be equally effective at restoring balance. Breathing exercises, for example, can provide an energy boost any time of day, while meditation can be adapted for any environment. Moving beyond the poses presents an opportunity for transformation and growth. Building on the foundation of physical poses, these techniques help a yoga practice strengthen and blossom over time.
