Now, you’re going to find that you sometimes underexpose your image when trying to use fast shutter speeds, particularly in low light. This is where increasing your ISO is really helpful.
For his series ‘Hyper’, Denis Darzacq turns a supermarket into a stage for street dancers to perform. Here a dancer hangs suspended in the air, like something from a sci-fi movie.
Increasing your ISO is essential if you want to use fast shutter speeds in low light.
Even when you’re not after such striking effects – perhaps you’re simply wanting to avoid camera shake in low light – increasing your ISO will help you access faster shutter speeds. Remember, camera shake occurs at speeds slower than about 1/60 so nudge up your ISO just enough to tip you over that marker. Don’t be tempted to just whack up your ISO as high as it will go or you’ll risk unnecessary image noise.
