Seductive silhouettes

Unlike the previous image, where the photographer brought out the detail in the shadows, here Adam Pretty has thrown them into absolute blackness. The divers and surrounding architecture have become beautifully clean, abstract forms silhouetted against a richly textured sky.

To silhouette your backlit subject use ‘Exposure Compensation’ and scroll towards the –.

By doing this you’ll underexpose your whole image, making the shadows darker while drawing out the detail in the highlights.

The more you underexpose your image, the darker the shadow areas will become and you’ll start to see more detail in the highlights. But, again, don’t take my word for it. Give it a go yourself.

Now go out and practise
