Is Lung King Heen really the best Chinese restaurant in the world? That debate started when the restaurant was awarded three Michelin stars (2009), the only restaurant in Hong Kong to receive such an accolade. Moreover, Chef Chan Yan Tak is the only Chinese chef ever to have three stars pinned on him. The cuisine on offer is Cantonese, with an emphasis on seafood. The best Cantonese cuisine consists of fresh ingredients, clear flavours and contrasting textures. Lung King Heen certainly comes out very highly in that regard. There is a short but delightful dim sum list which forms a wonderful appetiser. The main courses should include a seafood dish of some kind, at which Chef Chan excels. The barbequed suckling pig is a favourite with Hong Kong visitors. The menu is extensive and ranges from relatively humble and well-known dishes (barbequed pork with honey) to more intricate ones (chicken baked in clay with black Perigord truffle). And don’t miss out on the exquisite desserts. In fact, the latter is a hard choice to make, so go for the Lung King Heen dessert sampler. The waiting staff is really quite fantastic and knowledgeable, always willing and able to enhance your experience. With all the wonderful cuisine, there seems hardly the need to mention the undulating silver-leaf ceiling, and overall sleek and understated modernity of the restaurant interior. Lung King Heen means “view of the dragon”, but the views of Victoria Harbour are subtle and certainly not demanding of your attention, which makes a nice change. So, is it the best Chinese restaurant in the world? Well, if it is not, then it comes pretty damn close!
