Hong Kong’s newest shopping centre is Elements, which resides in West Kowloon by the harbour. Designed by Benov (the architectural firm that created Bluewater in the UK, Europe’s largest mall), Elements offers over 1 million sq. ft. of retail space, set over four levels, and is a prime example of contemporary Asian, perfectly formed, upscale shopping mall. The mall’s plan is based on the Chinese feng shui principle of the five elements of nature—fire, water, earth, metal and wood—with each zone featuring a certain mix of retailers as well as various works of art (some interactive) reflecting the theme. For example, the Wood zone features health and beauty boutiques; the Earth zone contains high-street fashion; and the Metal zone contains luxury brands. Besides the attractions of shopping, there is a 12-screen cinema and ice-rink (in the Fire zone), as well as a large (700,000 sq. ft.) rooftop garden with several options for alfresco wining and dining. You can find all the usual mid–high end brands in Elements. But some of the features include Bals Tokyo (eclectic home furnishings and accessories from Japan), Jimmy Choo (definitely for the well-heeled), Onitsuka Tiger (cult sneakers), Kura Chika (carries the Porter and Luggage Label range of bags designed and made in Japan by Yoshida & Co), Anteprima Wirebag (contrarian, futuristic handbags), Ascot Chang (one of Hong Kong’s favourite tailors), and EQ:IQ (offers ready-to-wear fashion and accessories that blends East and West). Because it is situated on top of Kowloon train station (where you can check in and catch the Airport Express), Elements offers a pleasant option to kill time before heading off to the airport.
