If you need to take a momentary break from the frenetic beast that is Hong Kong, art and culture offers an escape for mind and body. Following its handover to China in 1997 in particular, Hong Kong invested generously in its museums of culture and history, providing locals and visitors with a deeper appreciation of how Hong Kong came to be what it is today. But perhaps underrated is the simplicity of taking a walk in some of the older parts of Hong Kong which offers visitors moments of stillness and new discovery. In terms of contemporary arts, the scene in Hong Kong has never been more rich and diverse, culminating in two major annual events on the cultural calendar: the City Festival and the Hong Kong International Film Festival. And if you want escapism of the opposite extreme, well, there’s always the glitz of Macau, the casino mecca of Asia.
