Day 105

David—The Musician-King

1 Samuel 16:13–23

David was only about fifteen, with bright eyes and rosy cheeks. Samuel anointed him with oil as his older brothers watched. God’s Spirit was with David from that day on. At the same time, Saul became very gloomy. He was not at peace with God.

Because David played the harp well, Jesse sent him to Saul. Saul’s servants thought that the music would help cheer the king. Saul loved David. His music made the king feel better. But Saul didn’t know that Samuel had anointed David. The boy who played the harp for Saul was Israel’s future king.

Questions: Why was Saul gloomy? Why did Saul like David’s music?
