1 Samuel 17:1–45
While Saul was king, the Philistines battled with Israel. There was a giant Philistine named Goliath. He was nine feet tall and impossible to fight. He dared any Israeli to fight him. “Let him kill me!” Goliath roared. “Then we’ll be your servants.” But Saul’s army was afraid.
“Who’s this?” David asked. “Don’t let him defy God’s army.” With his shepherd’s staff in hand, David went to fight Goliath. From a stream, David picked five stones for his slingshot.
David challenged Goliath: “You come with a sword. I come in the name of the Lord of Hosts.”
Questions: Why was Saul’s army afraid of Goliath? The giant had a sword; what did David say he came with?
