Day 159

The Hidden Boy Becomes King

2 Chronicles 22:1–23:21

After Jehoram died, his son, Ahaziah, became king in Judah. One year after Ahaziah became king, he was with King Joram in Israel. Jehu killed Ahaziah when he killed Joram and Ahab’s family. That day, Athaliah’s son Ahaziah, brother Joram, and mother Jezebel all died. Athaliah was enraged and killed all the royal family of Judah.

Only Ahaziah’s youngest son survived—the baby Joash. Ahaziah’s sister, Jehoshabeath, hid Joash in the temple.

Meanwhile Athaliah made herself queen in Judah. She stopped the Lord’s worship, built a temple for Baal, and led the idol worship.

Seven years later, Joash was ready. Jehoiada brought young Joash out of the temple to the people. Jehoiada put the crown on him and the people shouted, “Long live the king!”

The sound of praise brought Queen Athaliah from her palace. “Treason, treason!” she cried as she ran into the temple.

“Take this woman out of the Lord’s house,” commanded Jehoida. Athaliah was dragged out and killed. And so David’s royal family ruled again in Judah.

Questions: How did Joash survive Athaliah’s slaughter? What did Athaliah do when she was queen?
