Jeremiah 37:1–38:13
Nebuchadnezzar carried the captives away and made Zedekiah king. Zedekiah promised to serve Nebuchadnezzar. Soon the promise was broken. He also began to pray to false gods who couldn’t help him.
Jeremiah warned Zedekiah: “You’re going to be handed over to the king of Babylon. The people who go with the Babylonians will live. Those who stay to fight will die in battle and famine.”
Angered, Zedekiah threw Jeremiah in a muddy prison pit. He was left to die. But an Ethiopian named Ebedimelech asked permission and rescued Jeremiah. Ebedimelech pulled him up from the pit with ropes.
Questions: What would happen to the people who went with the Babylonians? Who rescued Jeremiah from the muddy pit?
