Day 233

“You’re the Son of God!”

Luke 4:33–41

In Capernaum lived a man who was controlled by a demon. He saw Jesus, and the demon cried out: “Let us alone, Jesus of Nazareth! Have you come to destroy us? I know you; you’re the Holy One of God.”

Jesus commanded the demon, “Be silent and come out of him!” The demon threw the man down on the ground and came out. The man wasn’t hurt.

Everyone around was amazed. “What kind of speaking is this?” they wondered. “He has power to command the evil spirits. And out they come!” The reports about Jesus were heard everywhere.

After this, Jesus entered Peter’s house. There, Peter’s mother-in-law was suffering with a high fever. They asked him about her. Jesus stood over the woman and rebuked the fever. It left her. Right away, Peter’s mother-in-law got out of bed. She served them their meal.

As the sun was setting, people brought the sick to Jesus. He put his hands on them and cured them. Demons came out of many people, shouting, “You’re the Son of God!” Jesus wouldn’t let the demons speak because they knew he was Christ.

Questions: What did Jesus do to make the demons leave? Why wouldn’t Jesus let the demons speak?
