Day 234

“Let Down Your Nets for Fish”

Luke 5:1–11

Once Jesus was beside the Sea of Galilee. Nearby were two fishing boats, belonging to Peter and Andrew and James and John. These young disciples were nearby washing their nets. Jesus stepped into Peter’s boat and sat teaching the crowds.

Jesus finished teaching. “Peter,” he said, “put out into deep water and let down your nets for fish.”

“Master,” Peter answered, “we’ve worked all night long and caught nothing. But if you say so, I’ll let down the nets.” When they did, they caught so many fish their nets were breaking. Peter signaled James and John, who came and filled both boats to overflowing!

Overwhelmed with God’s wonder, he fell down and cried, “Go away from me, Lord. I’m a sinful man!”

“Don’t be afraid,” Jesus comforted Peter. “From now on, you’ll catch people.” The young men left their boats and all they had and followed Jesus.

Questions: Why did Jesus get into the fishing boat? Why do you think Jesus brought so many fish to Peter’s net?
