Mark 4:35–5:6
At evening, Jesus said, “Let’s cross to the other side.” With other boats, the disciples rowed across the Sea of Galilee. A big storm came up. Waves beat into the boat. It was about to be swamped. But Jesus was asleep in the stern of the boat.
They awakened him. “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re all about to drown?”
He woke up and rebuked the wind. Speaking to the sea, Jesus said, “Peace! Be still.” The wind stopped, and there was dead calm on the water.
“Why are you afraid?” he asked them. “Do you still have no faith?”
They were filled with great awe. “Who is this?” they asked each other. “Even the wind and the sea obey him.”
They came to the other side of the sea. This was the country of the Gerasenes. A man lived in a graveyard here. He howled on the mountainsides and bruised himself with stones. An unclean spirit lived in this man. Whenever he was captured and chained, he broke the chains and escaped.
This man with an unclean spirit saw Jesus arrive at the shore.
