Day 264

Jesus—The Good Shepherd

John 10:1–39

A shepherd keeps his sheep safe in a barn. The shepherd always goes into the barn through the door. A thief sneaks into the barn another way. The shepherd knows his sheep by name, and they know his voice. They won’t follow a stranger.”

Jesus was explaining why the once-blind man followed him. But the people couldn’t understand his meaning. So he tried again: “This is the truth. I’m the barn door. All who came before me are thieves. But the sheep didn’t listen to them. Remember, I’m the door. Anyone who enters through me will be saved. They’ll go in and out of the pasture. The thieves come to kill. I came that people would have life, overflowing life.

“I’m the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives his life for the sheep. I know my own sheep and my sheep know me. Just like the Father knows me and I know my Father.”

“You’re only human. God isn’t your father!” Some of the Jews picked up stones to throw at Jesus.

“I’ve done many of my Father’s good works. Is this why you want to stone me?” When they tried to arrest Jesus, he escaped.

Questions: Why did Jesus come? Why did some people want to throw stones at Jesus?
