Day 289

The Master Washes His Servants’ Feet

John 13:3–16

Jesus got up from the meal and poured water into a pan. He brought a towel and began to wash his disciples’ feet. It came to Peter’s turn. He said, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”

Jesus answered, “You don’t understand why I’m doing this. But later you’ll see.”

“You’ll never wash my feet!” Peter declared.

“Unless I wash your feet, you don’t belong to me. You call me ‘Lord’ and ‘Master,’ and I’ve washed your feet. So you should do the same to each other. The servants are not greater than their master.”

Questions: Why did Jesus say he had to wash Peter’s feet? Why should the disciples wash each other’s feet?
