John 13:21–38
Jesus was troubled. “One of you will betray me,” he said. The disciples looked at each other. They didn’t know who he was talking about. Peter signaled John to ask Jesus who he was talking about.
“Lord,” asked John, “who is it?”
“The one to whom I give this piece of bread.” Jesus gave the bread to Judas Iscariot. Just then Satan entered into Judas. “Do what you’re going to do quickly,” Jesus said. No one at the table knew why he said this. Some thought that Jesus wanted Judas to buy something for the festival. Others thought it meant that Judas should give something to the poor. After he took the bread, Judas quickly went out. It was nighttime.
“I’ll only be with you a little longer,” said Jesus. “Here is a new commandment for you. Love one another just as I’ve loved you. You cannot come to the place I’m going. But you’ll follow afterward.”
Peter said, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I’ll lay down my life for you.”
“I’ll tell you what you’ll really do. Listen for the rooster to crow tomorrow morning. By then, you’ll have rejected me three times.”
Questions: What is the Lord’s new commandment? What would Peter do before the rooster crowed?
