John 21:12–25
As they stood by the fire, no disciple dared ask, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. Jesus took the bread and gave it to them. He did the same with the fish.
When they finished breakfast, Jesus spoke to Peter: “Peter, do you love me more than these fish?” “Yes, Lord. You know that I love you.”
“Then feed my lambs,” Jesus replied. Then he asked Peter the same question a second time. “Do you love me?”
“Yes, Lord. You know that I love you.”
“Then tend my sheep.” Then, for a third time, Jesus asked, “Do you love me?” Peter felt hurt that Jesus had to ask this so many times.
“Lord,” he answered, “you know everything. You know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. I’ll tell you the truth, Peter. When you were young, you did whatever you wished. But when you’re old it will be different. Someone else will take you where you don’t want to go.” This meant that Peter would someday die because he served God.
Jesus did so many things. The world can’t hold all the books that could be written about him.
Questions: How many times did Jesus ask, “Do you love me?” Why did Peter feel hurt?
