We have attempted to present a topic that has never been presented before in such depth. As the trailblazers, we had no path to follow so we hope that the path we chose was both helpful and at least somewhat interesting. The challenges were trying to find the right balance between too much and not enough information, and how to present a fundamentally boring subject in a way that would at least make it readable. We hope that we overcame both challenges and that you will find this book a useful resource.
From a content perspective, our intent was to share what we have learned over more the 20 years of specializing in US-Canada tax and financial planning. While some chapters such as the basics of US taxation could have been written by most US tax professionals, most of the chapters are filled with unique insights only a few people could provide. We gladly share this information and hope that you benefit from what you learn.
Now that you have read through the book, you no doubt have questions that were not answered or were not explained clearly enough. Please feel free to give us your suggestions so that we can incorporate them into the next edition of the book. As professionals, we always want to do a good job and are constantly looking to improve; your comments will help to make this book as good as it can be.
This book is only information; it is not a substitute for qualified professional advice. Just as you would not consider reading a book on foot surgery then attempting to operate on your foot, you should not expect that you can learn everything there is to know about the taxation of Canadians living in the US in this book.
We know from experience that some of you will call or email us with questions. While we sincerely would like to help you (that is why we are in this business), please understand that we will not be able to get to all of your questions. While we will occasionally answer questions for free, we are in the business of giving valuable advice for a fee.
Lastly, we want to remind you that if you found this book useful, we have other books that you might also be interested in. All of the books can be ordered by calling our office; from the publisher, Self-Counsel Press; our websites, and from Amazon.
