SMART SHOPPING: Curry Powder

Though blends vary dramatically, curry powders come in two basic styles: mild or sweet and a hotter version called Madras. The former combines as many as 20 different ground spices, herbs, and seeds. We tasted six curry powders, mixed into a simple rice pilaf and in a plain vegetable curry. Our favorite was Penzeys Sweet Curry Powder, though Durkee Curry Powder came in a close second.
