SMART SHOPPING: Ketchup
Since the 1980s, most ketchup has been made with high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS); manufacturers like this ingredient because it’s cheap and easy to mix with other ingredients. But in the past few years, many manufacturers have started offering alternatives, such as ketchup made with white sugar. For our recent taste test of eight national brands, we focused on classic tomato ketchups. Tasters tried each plain and with fries. It was clear they wanted ketchup that tasted the way they remembered it: boldly seasoned, with all the flavor elements–salty, sweet, tangy, and tomatoey. Our top three ketchups were all sweetened with sugar; Heinz Organic Tomato Ketchup got the top spot.
