When B. K. Fulton, founding chairman and CEO of Soulidifly Productions, delivered the commencement address for Virginia Commonwealth University’s da Vinci Center, he reminded students to never forget people on the margins, like the lesser-known female warriors. Here are a few:

Marie Van Brittan Brown: Invented the home security system in 1969 in response to the high level of crime in her Queens, New York, neighborhood.

Shirley Ann Jackson: The first black woman to earn a PhD from MIT. She headed up the team that developed the technology leading to the touchtone phone, caller ID, and call waiting.

Dr. Gladys West: Invented GPS and was inducted into the Space and Missile Pioneers Hall of Fame in 2018.
