Courage is fear holding on a minute longer.
—General George S. Patton
As a survivor of breast cancer, I cannot imagine what it must be like for children to battle the disease, or to be a terrified parent watching their child endure treatments. As a “Morning Boost” on Today, we aired video of a surprise parade for a little girl named Mabel who had finished her final chemotherapy treatment for leukemia. Her parents had planned a big shindig for their “Mighty Mabel,” but when the pandemic demanded social distancing, the party was canceled. But supportive friends and family rallied together and organized a pop-up parade, complete with a flashing fire truck and dozens of decorated cars, passengers waving signs through the windows. Words on one back windshield read: “NO MORE CHEMO!” The courageous three-year-old and her grateful parents were all smiles, as the celebration just kept rolling along.
