Looming out of the sea just shy of 3,000 ft (887 m), the brooding volcanic bulk of Mount Scenery dominates Saba. Although it is often draped in cloud, on a clear day the views over the glittering Caribbean Sea, studded with islands, are jaw-dropping.

Even in the mist, the fairytale elfin forest holds plenty of allure, dense with mountain mahogany, laden with bromeliads and orchids, and dripping with moss. Just below, wild plantains, mountain palms, and ferns predominate, while cactuses punctuate the forested landscape. Splashes of color are provided by begonias and raspberries. Wildlife to look out for include the leopard-spotted Saban anole lizard, iguanas, and stray goats. Climbing the Mount Scenery Staircase is the most popular of the island’s dozen trails. Precisely 1,064 stone steps climb from the Saba Trail Office in Windwardside to the summit, taking around an hour and a half. The route is mercifully punctuated with benches – ideal spots to have a swig of water and gaze down at Saba. A guided trek with native Saban “Crocodile” Johnson can be organized at the trail shop.
Mount Scenery is the highest point on the island, and in the entire Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Insider Tip
In 2018, the new Elfin Trail opened, offering an alternative route up Mount Scenery from above Hell’s Gate. It affords great views and more varied vegetation than the staircase as the path also climbs through old plantations.
