n Locator Map (for more detail see Area Map)

A scenic drive through the interior rainforest, Route de la Trace or N3 climbs from Fort-de-France, on the Caribbean coast, to Le Morne Rouge, the highest village on the Martinique at 1,500 ft (457 m). Flanked by lush vegetation, the route follows an old path laid by Jesuit priests in the 1700s. Visitors now drive on the road winding through the mountain range and professional guides lead 4WD excursions off-road and through rugged terrain. Some areas can only be navigated on foot. A popular hiking trail is the Trace des Jésuites, which runs along a ridge above the Route de la Trace and offers sweeping views of Mont Pelée.
