Fighting Inflammation with Healthy Food Choices

Inflammation is a first response by the immune system to irritation or infection. It symbolizes the prime signs of redness (known as rubor in Latin), swelling (tumor), heat (calor), pain (odor), and the dysfunctionality of the organs affected.

Inflammation can be classified into two broad types, namely;

1. Acute inflammation is a kind of inflammation that begins swiftly and rapidly becomes severe. Signs and symptoms are only shown for some days.

2. Chronic inflammation is a long-term inflammation, which can last for many months and even years.

Health disorders associated with inflammation include;

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a term essentially used to express two conditions: ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. This is a disease caused as result of a dysregulated immune response to host intestinal microflora. Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are long-term conditions that entail inflammation of the gut. Ulcerative colitis only affects the colon -large intestine. Crohn's disease can affect any part of the digestive system, from the mouth to the anus.

Heart disease is a term encompassing any disorder of the heart. Heart disease entails an array of conditions that affect the heart. Diseases that affect the heart include the following; blood vessel diseases – coronary artery disease, heart rhythm problems- arrhythmias, heart defects-congenital heart defects, and so on.

Obesity implies having too much body fat. It differs from being overweight (which means weighing too much). It occurs over time when individuals consume more calories than they use. Obesity is known to increase an individual risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, and some kind of cancers.

Rheumatoid arthritis and Osteoarthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and Osteoarthritis (OA) and are two of the most widespread musculoskeletal conditions affecting individuals across the United States. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease; that is the immune system attacks parts of the body, particularly the joints such as hands, fingers, elbows, knees, and hips. Generally, osteoarthritis affects the small fingers joints and the thumbs, as well as the knees.

Allergy is a condition in which immune system reacts oddly to an alien substance.  Allergies also referred to as allergic diseases, are a number of conditions caused by hypersensitivity of the immune system to something in the environment that habitually causes little or no problem in most individuals.

Asthma is an unrelieved disease involving the airways in the lungs. These bronchial tubes or airways permit air to come in and out of the lungs. Asthma is a state in which your airways narrow and swells and secrete excess mucus. This can make breathing complicated and elicit coughing, breath shortness, and wheezing.

Lupus is a systemic autoimmune disease that happens when an individual's immune system attacks your own tissues and organs. Inflammation caused by lupus can affect several body systems; including the skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, joints, heart, and lungs.

Hashimoto's disease is a condition in which your immune system attacks the thyroid, a small gland at the base of the neck below Adam's apple. A disorder in which the immune system turns against the bodies owns tissues.

Diabetes describes a variety of metabolic diseases in which an individual has high blood sugar, either because the production of insulin is not enough, or because the cells of the body do not respond suitably to insulin or both.

Cancer can be described as a disease in which abnormal cells divide wildly and annihilate body tissue. It develops when the body’s normal control mechanism stops working.

Celiac disease is a serious autoimmune disorder that can occur in genetically predisposed individuals where the consumption of gluten results to damage in the small intestine. It is reported to affect 1 in 100 people worldwide.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a potentially disabling disease of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). In multiple sclerosis, the immune system attacks the myelin (the protective sheath) that envelops the nerve fibers thus causes communication failures between the brain and the rest of the body.

Skin diseases are in hundreds of skin conditions that affect humans. Conditions such that irritate, clog or inflame your skin can cause symptoms such as redness, swelling, burning, and itching. Several skin problems, like acne, equally affect your appearance. Skin can also develop several types of cancers.

A headache is an indication of pain anywhere in the region of the head or neck. It occurs in migraines -sharp or throbbing pains-, tension-type headaches, and cluster headaches. A headache can be a sign of stress or emotional distress. It can lead to other problems.

Brain Disorder is a broad term for any brain disease that alters brain function or structure. The brain is the control center of the body. It controls thoughts, memory, speech, and movement. It regulates the function of many organs. Inflammation in the brain can bring problems such as loss of vision, paralysis, and weakness. Loss of brain cells, which happens if an individual suffers a stroke, can affect his or her ability to think plainly.
