Chapter 45

Tuesday, 11:00 A.M., before English

NATE WAS IN THE GREAT HALL. HE TOOK HIS CELL FROM HIS BACKPACK, looked at it, put it back, then took it out again. He was about to stash it once more; instead, before he could stop himself, he called Sergeant Peratta. He told the cop all the stuff he’d heard Elliot say about his dad last Monday in Tut’s office. And he described the threatening note he and Olivia had seen on Elliot’s computer. The one sent to Tut that said, “Watch out! Your days are numbered.”

“I don’t think those kids killed Mr. Tut, but I thought you should know what they did. And I know I should have said something before about hearing Elliot arguing with Tut…. It’s still the truth.”

Okay, you’re a stoolie, Nate told himself after hanging up. But as Ben would say, “Live with it.” He’d only squealed about things he’d heard or seen himself. He wished the cops knew about Grant Werner being at Chaps, but that was something Olivia had to deal with herself.

Nate had started for the stairs when his mother came flying from the Annex and spotted him.

“Nate! Wait! I need to speak to you.”
