Chapter 16

Millie looking annoyed with a floppy hat on her head, with a silk scarf tying it under her chin.

Then I had to walk around wearing Múinteoir Emer’s huge floppy straw hat which was way too big for me and had to be tied onto my head with her silk scarf. Which was not at all completely embarrassing. Even though Laura was really nice and told me that she thought it looked kind of cool, I could see she was only pretending because Ellie was elbowing Big Bow Rebecca and pointing at the hat and then they both looked at me and LAUGHED.

So, when I saw a peacock with a loose tail feather, I suddenly thought that it would be the PERFECT addition to my hat to make it look more FASHIONABLE, like one of those hats posh ladies wear at the horse racing. I reached down to grab the feather, only, when I tugged it, I realised that it wasn’t loose at all, but still very much attached to the peacock’s butt …

This made the peacock SQUAWK really loudly like a car siren. The shock of having one of its tail feathers yanked made it RUN at high speed towards Aidan, who tried to escape but slipped and fell, putting his hand right into a dropped ice cream cone that was slowly melting in a big puddle on the ground and swarming with ANTS.

An annoyed looking peacock

Then Aidan FREAKED out and shouted that there were ants running up his arm and one had found its way into his armpit. He got really angry and when he stood back up, he ran after me to try to clean the runny ant-infested ice cream off on my shirt. But just as he was about to grab me, I ducked to the right and instead he got it on Múinteoir Emer’s silk scarf, which was holding her hat on my head.

Then everyone watching gave a BIG gasp because Múinteoir Emer had seen the whole thing and was NOT happy.

First, she gave out to me for messing and frightening the poor peacock. Then she gave out to Aidan because she had to clean ice cream and ants off his arms with a wet wipe, but it was when she saw her silk scarf and the sticky white mess that was smeared all over it, that she was really NOT happy.

Then I also felt not happy, because I really hadn’t meant to hurt the poor peacock, and because I now had ice cream goop on my head as well as a totally uncool hat.

Millie looking unhappy in the sloppy sunhat with ice cream goop on her.

Katie and Seán were also not happy that I had traumatised the poor peacock and told Múinteoir Emer that perhaps it was time to move on to the next area before there was any more trouble.

And even though I was trying to be good, what happened next totally got me into even more TROUBLE.

But it completely WASN’T my fault.
