So what do I remember? That’s what I remember, the entire gawd-awful mess.
My talk with the deputy turned out good since we was able to come to an understandin’. Went over his story enough times John’ll remember things the way he’s s’posed to. Sure—he was looking at me funny the whole time. The way people do when they ain’t found peace with what they done. Ain’t a problem I got, but I was neighborly enough not to grin; no reason not to show respect for the law, even if me and my family ain’t gotta worry ‘bout ‘em no more.
Hell, that deputy will keep his story straight alright. This time his deal ain’t with Sis—it’s with me. I’s the one that’s got JD’s birth certificate… and now I got the Renshaws’ tape.
To be fair, some people’s gossip ‘bout our family is true—you don’t wanna get caught in bed with a Cousins. Then again, that ain’t nothin’ new.
Way I see it, ever’ body’s good, just some’s better’n the rest….
