Dear Pearl,
What a lovely, spirit-lifting, happy-making surprise to find your letter in the mail today! We didn’t ask our post office to forward mail because we don’t know how long we’ll be here, so it was a complete surprise. Loved the Egyptian card—they had some lovely ideas, like painting people they loved and things they loved on the walls of their tombs. Wish I could tuck my Asti Spumanti under my arm and pop over for some quiche. I remember fondly the one you made when I visited you—the only one I’ve ever had. Read a good book since I saw you, Sally Hemings is the name of it. It’s in paperback for $3.25. She was Thomas Jefferson’s slave and mistress for twenty-plus years. A really good book with real insight into black-white and woman-man relationships. I think you’ll like it when you have time. Henry and I bought WIG#1 today. Very conservative and strange, but I still have enough hair not to wear it, so I won’t get my “dreadlocks” wig yet! Did Kris tell you Lucius Lomax was hitchhiking from Georgia to Texas? MY GOD! He came walking up the driveway to visit them; stayed the night; and they enjoyed him thoroughly. He made fun of TV just like they did, she said. Next day, he hit the road.
I see the doctor tomorrow. UGH! But so it goes. Will call you. Keep the quiches coming!
Love,
Ma
