SEPTEMBER 4, 1974

A car from the City Hall Motor Pool pulls up in the yard and a messenger gets out and knocks on the door. When I open it, he hands me an envelope and says, “The mayor would like some help on this speech. Just call me when it’s ready and I’ll come and pick it up.” By the time Daddy got up, I was nursing the baby and working on the mayor’s remarks at the same time. Daddy just shook his head. He thinks I’m crazy. Deignan was nursing so she didn’t seem to mind. She probably thinks all mothers do this.
