QUICK RECOVERY

CLAUDIA

I had already had my breakfast when I got the discharge order from the nurse. I was happy to be heading out; another day of this food and I would lose it.

John had stepped out to take a shower and said he would be headed back once he was finished. I had found him fast asleep on the side of my bed, gripping my hand. It was so romantic.

While he was out, I tried to rise; it was just me alone in the room. When I sat up, I realized that it didn’t hurt as much as it had the day before and rose from the bed without a problem. I couldn’t help but feel it was all happening too fast.

Dr. Spencer had said I would need four weeks to heal; it seemed like it would take longer for me to be fully mobile if that were the case. It was strange the way I could hardly feel the surgical incision anymore.

I walked to the window and peered out. It was early. Had Michael called? Or if he would be heading to school today?

I strolled to the bathroom and, after taking care of business and washing my hands, I lifted my gown, curious to see what the scar looked like. I hoped that it wouldn’t look too bad.

It hurt more removing the surgical tape than anything else. At first, I was afraid to look as I pulled at the bandages. A few staples were stuck to the threads and tape. A few others fell away.

I panicked, thinking I had pulled them off, but when I looked again, all I saw was a single, faint line. It was barely visible. Wow! This doctor was good.

I ran over the line with shaking fingers and felt skin. There was no scar lumping. And there was no pain whatsoever. This couldn’t be normal.

I heard the door open and put the bandage back.

“Honey, do you need help in there?” the nurse asked.

“I’m fine,” I called back hastily and came out.

She was surprised to see me out of bed.

“You, okay? If you’re in pain, just let me know.”

I jumped on the bed and it startled her some more. I guess I was in good spirits. The prom was coming up and I was over this. I had no scar to worry about. Not only that, but I was also thinking of going to John’s house and jumping into his pool.

“You can start getting dressed as soon as the doctor comes in to give you one last check,” the nurse informed me with a nod and left.

A few minutes later, John returned and looked ready to go.
