Publisher’s note: Reproducing the maps from the original manuscripts was a huge challenge for everybody concerned with this project. The quality available to us was very poor indeed in most cases. We wanted to include as many of the maps as possible, aware of the importance of these to the manuscripts and to tracing the course of the unit’s operations generally. Not only was the technical quality very poor, but many of the place names were incorrect. Editor Fred Steinhardt has done a superb job in assisting us in trying to clarify the maps. Working within technical limitations, we have done our best to reproduce the maps for the reader. Any errors that remain are our responsibility, not the editor’s.
