Choose People, Not Things

Don Aslett, a top organizer in America, provides some good advice to help us when we decide to unclutter our homes: “Don’t love what can’t love you back.” Is your first thought, “Well, of course”? Yet think about how much time, attention, care, and yes, even love, we end up giving to our things. We give a lot of ourselves over to selecting a couch. We see an outfit that strikes our fancy and our first words are, “I love this!” We hold on to objects as though our happiness and fulfillment depend on them.

If you can create some distance between your feelings and your possessions, it will be much easier to determine what to keep and what to get rid of. An item that enhanced your life at one point could now be a burden, an obstacle, or a crutch. Spend your time, energy, and love on the people in your life!
