Derek Bailey’s spoken word – derived from my taped interviews with him – is indented, and is followed by the date of the interview in square brackets. Other people’s words are also indented, followed either by a book or magazine reference, or – in the case of interviews I’ve conducted myself – the speaker’s initials and the date of interview, also in square brackets. My own questions and jottings are signed with the initials of my punk/poet alter ego, Out To Lunch. There’s a list of books used at the end in case you want to know what edition of a book to refer to. This strategy was adopted to avoid recourse to footnotes, a textual device that seems inappropriate when dealing with improvisors and their disregard for the yawning archive.
