* The Antiquities Act had been pushed through by one of the unsung heroes of Capitol Hill conservation, Iowa congressman and fellow Boone and Crockett member John Lacey. He had previously cemented the B and C’s reputation as a political force by shepherding the Lacey Act of 1894, “to protect the birds and animals in Yellowstone National Park.” He’d been convinced of Yellowstone’s lawlessness when his stagecoach was robbed there at gunpoint. Lacey also wrote the Lacey Act of 1900, a wildlife protection bill that, when passed, became the first comprehensive federal law dedicated to preserving the environment.
