Both historical and modern texts include numerous English language variations of the names of many of the towns and villages on Crete. In the interests of clarity I have tried to adopt the most commonly used modern version throughout the book.
Many of the numerous published books, articles, manuscripts and online sources disagree about the timing of certain events or the identities and locations of particular units. I have tried as far as possible to reconcile the different accounts but apologise in advance for any errors that have survived.
