Layer Brown Paper under Mulch
After preparing the ground and installing plants in your garden, layer your beds with opened brown paper bags or flattened cardboard boxes before putting down mulch to keep weeds in check. Cut or tear the paper or cardboard so that it fits around the base of your plants.
