Jiro Horikoshi (1903–1982). This young graduate of the Kōkū Kenkyūjo at the University of Tokyo became the chief designer at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries at an early age. He fashioned a ground-breaking fighter aircraft for the Imperial Japanese Navy that was both beautiful and deadly, the A6M Rei-sen, or Zero.
