Principal Variations of the A6M
A6M1 – Equipped with a 780hp (470kW) Mitsubishi Mk2 Zuisei-13 radial engine.
A6M3 – Equipped with a 1,130hp (8,934kW) Sakae-21 radial engine. Cannon upgraded to Type 99 Mk 2, increased muzzle velocity, 100 rpg. The wings were ‘clipped’ square (resulting in the temporary allocation of the separate Allied code-name of ‘Hamp’.)
A6M5a – Cannon fitted were Type 99 Mk4, 85rpg. 2 × wing carried 132lb (60kg) bombs.
A6M5b – One 7.7mm machine-gun replaced by a 12. 7mm machine-gun.
A6M5c – Both 7.7mm machine-guns replaced by 13.2mm machine-guns – with option to fit an additional fuselage-mounted 13.2mm machine-gun. Armour protection for pilot introduced.
A6M7 – A Suicide (Kamikaze) variant designed for the job rather than the conversion, which substituted 1 × 551-lb (250kg) bomb for the drop tank.
A6M8c – Planned to be equipped with Mitsubishi Kinsei-62 engine.
A6M2-N – Type 2 floatplane with centreline float and two outriggers. 327 built by Nakajima.
A6K – Two-seater Advance Trainer variant.
