We embrace many desires in writing this book: to share a story, to touch people’s hearts, to offer a glimpse into the plenitude and beauty of lives in the Amazon rainforest—lives so often described and dismissed as “poor” or “primitive”—to awaken a sense of connectedness between those living in the main oil-consuming nations and those living in the forests targeted for destruction by their oil economies, and to suggest that such connectedness involves responsibilities, one of which is to discuss and address changes in the patterns of consumption in industrial societies. A part of the dream of this book—surely that of many books—is that readers will be moved to learn more, to question more, to consider and take actions in their daily lives that we will never know about. A part of the dream of this book is that it will live in the myriad forms of resistance inspired by so many people, struggles, stories and works of art.
Mitch and I met, fell in love, and started a family all in the course of struggling to defend indigenous territories from destruction at the hands of oil extraction. This is our life’s work and we would love for you to join us, in however seemingly distant or small a way.
