CREATE A PERSONAL MANTRA

Mantras are repeated sounds, words, or phrases intended to elevate your consciousness and positively impact your state of mind. You can whisper, chant, or silently recite a mantra—sort of like a prayer—to bring yourself back to the present, calm your nervous system, and quiet racing thoughts. Maybe you’re struggling with body image recently after noticing your weight has fluctuated (the dreaded Freshman 15 strikes again!). When you recognize those negative thoughts creeping in, try a mantra! By repeatedly saying a mantra, you shift your mind-set toward a positive intention, something that feels seriously empowering.

You can try a popular mantra from a religion (like the Sanskrit phrase “Aham Prema,” meaning “I am divine love,” or the Hindu word “Om”) or an inspirational statement like “I deserve love,” “I can get through this,” or “I am capable.” Repeat the mantra as you inhale and exhale deep breaths; if thoughts pop into your head, put your focus back on the mantra.
