Spending too much money at the campus bookstore (okay, the new shirts are pretty cool), ignoring your boyfriend’s calls, waking up with a major hangover, not studying for tomorrow’s test—mistakes come in all shapes and sizes. And they’re also a fact of life. Between all of the new experiences, challenging classes, and crazy-busy weeks, you’re bound to mess up, move in the wrong direction, or spectacularly fail once in a while. While those experiences might hurt your sense of self-worth, they often teach you what not to do next time, which ultimately helps you grow. So when you do make a mistake (because you will, and it’s okay!), look at it from that perspective. “Hey, it wasn’t fun—but I learned something!” Be vulnerable about the fact that you’re human, feel the resulting emotions with a healthy dose of compassion, and embrace whatever happened.
