If you left a family pet behind during the move to your dorm, you already know animals can be a huge source of comfort and companionship. Studies have even proven that petting and cuddling dogs can directly reduce stress levels for college students in particular, as well as increase happiness and energy levels. Many colleges provide animal therapy programs right on campus to help students deal with loneliness or homesickness—and often organize special events during midterms and finals where puppies will be brought in for snuggle sessions. You can also visit or volunteer at a local animal rescue shelter, or even stop by a nearby park off campus to scout out any friendly dogs. And if you are looking for a long-term companion (and have the means to care for them), you can check with disability services or residential life departments to see if emotional support pets are allowed on campus.
