This striking butterfly with its vivid colouration was targeted by collectors shortly after it was discovered. It is now rare and usually only found in Madagascar or in private art collections. The wings have tiny spikes along the edge, something which is unique to the species, and fine scales on the wings create its distinctive ultraviolet patterns. These are used to attract a mate.
