Unlike other swallowtail butterflies, the Spicebush prefers to fly low to the ground rather than gliding high up. It takes its name from its caterpillar’s favourite host plant, the Spicebush (Lindera benzoin). These butterflies take nectar from a range of plants including Honeysuckle, Jewelweed, Thistles and Lantana. In a bid to win their ideal mate, males will perform an elaborate courtship dance. The males also emit powerful pheromones during this intricate display which helps them win suitable partners.
