Chapter 9:Titles

Does It Need A Title?

Titles are good to have. For one thing, they will help you distinguish between your poems. Secondly, they keep your work organized, which is helpful in case you are looking for a specific poem. Another method of organizing your poems is the standard way of numbering, using Roman numerals, or have an alphanumeric order.

What Kind Of Title Should I Use?

Sometimes, the title is the first thing you write down. Other times, it is the last. Some titles seem to have nothing to do with the poem. Others are just based on the general subject, the first word, or the first line. Still others are formed by a repetition of a phrase or words in the poem itself. It is up to you and a matter of preference. Titles are not required, which is one more benefit to writing poetry.

Recap

Whether you decide to title your poems or not, it is a recommended practice to organize them. You can use words to do it, but numbers do just as well. As the poet and creator, the filing system need only make sense to you.
