Chapter 12: Writer’s Block
Writer’s block is being unable to write or come up with a creative idea that can become a completed work. It typically occurs in those who write for a living, usually those who write prose. It is being addressed here because journal entries are prose.
Breaks
There is such a thing as overdoing it or needing time off from writing. You can also try too hard or work too hard. Take a break. It will refresh and relax your mind. Believe that your inspiration (and the words) will come when it is time.
Reading
Reading takes the focus off your work and the writer’s block. You will eventually start creating again. Being over-focused is frustrating. Read something you did not write. In fact, watch television or interact with people. It will help you get back to feeling like yourself again.
Back To Work
Every writer or poet writes in a different way. You might want to approach it in a methodical manner. For instance, suppose you want to start at the beginning of the story or idea. You know how you want it to end, yet insist on starting with page one. Some free advice would be to start writing the end of the story first. You have already thought it out, and it is basically already written.
Previously, it was mentioned that some of you might think of a title before you even write the work. Whatever works for you is whatever works for you. If it feels like you are making progress then you are headed in the right direction.
Recap
Writer’s block happens. Deal with it by taking breaks from your writing. It is basically caused by pressure and stress you may be putting on yourself. Take some time to rest and recharge. When you decide to when write again, start with fundamentals.
