AUDREY HEPBURN’S PENULTIMATE MOVIE was not a theatrical feature but a made-for-TV heist caper opposite Robert Wagner, containing elements that reminded Hepburn fans of Charade and How to Steal a Million. The 1987 production was made inexpensively, but Audrey was able to retain the “armor” that a Givenchy wardrobe was for her. Playing a concert pianist, she has sumptuous fashions as bookends within the plot but otherwise spends most of the running time wearing a red shirtwaist dress. The New York Daily News’ Kay Gardella commented, “The actress hasn’t lost her feel for a light, adventurous, romantic cinematic escapade. Slim and attractive, despite the added years, Hepburn still is the essence of poise and elegance, and can drift down a flight of stairs with the same grace she displayed in Funny Face. . . .”
Audrey would make only one more film, Always (1989), before retiring from the screen entirely to devote her time to her loved ones and work as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador.
PLAYING THE BARONESS CAROLINE DuLac in Love Among Thieves, Audrey wore two differently colored versions of almost the same Givenchy dress.
